After the frustration over their unglamorous exit in the RHB Singapore Cup recently, Brunei DPMM FC bounced back last night by winning 3-1 against bottom of the league Balestier Khalsa FC in the Great Eastern - Yeo's Singapore League (S League) at Toa Payoh Stadium in Singapore.
DPMM FC, already without their three main defence forces Pg Sallehuddin Pg Hj Damit, Yussof Salleh and Rene Komar due to a lengthy ban by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), and missing another defender, Suhaime Yusof for last night match due to injury, were one goal down as early as the 22nd minute.
DPMM FC coach Simunic put left-winger Sairol Sahari at the back partnering Safari Wahit and Haji Subhi Abdilah with his tradition 3-5-2 formation and the tactic seemed to be costly as Balestier's Korean import striker Jun Jin took the advantage very well to score their first goal for a 1-0 lead after 22 minutes.
DPMM FC, who will play their last away game in the month of Ramadhan against the Young Lions on September 15 at Jalan Besar Stadium before heading back to Bandar Seri Begawan to play against Tampines Rovers FC on September 29, needed every point to make the top three in their first season in the Singapore League with seven games remaining.
Well known with their never-say-die attitude, DPMM FC got the goal they wanted when Croatian import midfielder, Ivan Jerkovic levelled the score in the 40th minute.
The half-time pep talk by coach Simunic to his players pushed them up a gear and were rewarded in the 62nd minute when Algerian import striker Abdel Hamid Berguiga got his name into the scoresheet for a 2-1 lead.
Six minutes after the second goal was scored, Simunic substituted Azwan Salleh for Hardi Bujang to strengthen his midfield before making another substitution in the 77th minute by bringing in striker Abu Bakar Mahari to replace Drazen Govic.
The substitutions worked very well for Simunic as Ivan Jerkovic scored his second goal of the night in the 79th minute to give the visitors a 3-1lead and a two-goal cushion.
Simunic made a late change in the 90th minute substituting Abdel Hamid Berguiga for midfield player Ak Mohd Nurhikman to give him a taste of the league.
With the win last night, DPMM FC overtook Gombak United for the 4th spot collecting 46 points after 26 matches and currently 15 points adrift of current league leader, SAF FC.
